A Recipe for Generations


Every event or family gathering this meal needs to be part of the event. This food brings family together. It passes from generation to generation and each family has its own flavor, its own touch. Every Puerto Rican family has a its own individual story of this plate. For some reason when kids are really young they do not like it, but as we get older we start to love it and embraced it. It becomes part of the family culture. The recipe for this meal it is passed through generation, each daughter learns from their mom so it makes even more special. 
Here is the recipe
 ž1 tablespoon olive oil
ž1/2 cup sofrito
ž1/2 cup chopped ham (or cooked pork pieces)
ž2 cups rice
ž4 cups water
ž1 packet sazón
ž1 15-ounce can Pigeon Peas/Gandules (drained and rinsed)
Preparation:
1. Heat olive oil in a 6-quart pot. Saute the sofrito and chopped ham for 1 minute. 2. Add the rice, water, sazón and gandules.
2. Bring to a boil. Let boil for 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Cover, reduce heat to medium low, and cook for 35 to 40 minutes.
     Tip: Do not use a lid with a vent that allows the steam to escape. Never lift the lid while cooking.
4. When finished cooking, stir the rice before serving. It should be light and fluffy.
