Yoga is Restraining and Modifying the Mind

The Second Sutra is “The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga” (3). In the Yogic Sutras of Patanjali, we learn the true meaning of yoga and the possible pathways of processes that take us there. There are many important points that Patanjali makes through the numbered Sutras, beginning with defining it yoga as “union” with oneself, nature and God, in the second Sutra. This is important, Patanjali says, because it causes a person to concentrate and focus on the elevated true self and detachment from attachments and desires. This Sutra also allows the mind to be controlled, and awareness to be to full attention while concentrating. I think that this Sutra brings up the general, main points of Yoga as a practice, habit, way of life.

Another Sutra that was interesting to me was the seventeenth: “Samprajnata samadhi (distinguished contemplation) is accompanied by reasoning, reflecting, rejoicing, and pure I-am-ness” (31). I believe that the highest form of living, through yogic practice and meditation, takes time, effort, and dedication.

In the twentieth Sutra, I feel that there is so much to be understood and learned regarding the seer: “To the others, this asamprajnata samadhi could come through faith, strength, memory, contemplation or by discernment” (37). It is important for people to realize their true selves and mistakes that need to be changed in the future.

The idea of the “OM” moving through the body, explained in the twenty-seventh Sutra, implied that it was the name of God. I think that maybe the vibrations going through your body while saying, “OM” represent the thoughts of God, positivity, and energy moving throughout the body.

I also like the obstacles that are presented, and understood to be deserted through practice. Sutra thirty-two: “The practice of concentration on a single subject [or the use of one technique] is the best way to prevent the obstacles and their accompanies” (52). It is important to realize and understand all the hurtful and fearful obstacles in life that can be destroyed through simply practicing.
