The Four Nutriments

The Buddha said,"When something has come to be, we have to acknowledge its presence and look deeply into its nature. When we look deeply we will discover the kinds of nutriments that have helped it come to be and that continue to feed it." The Buddha is talking about 4 vital nutriments that allow a certain state of mind to exist. The 4 Nutriments are edible foods, sense impressions, intention, and consciousness. Edible food is what we eat and drink. Sense impressions are the use of our 6 sense organs-eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Intention is the desire inside of us that attaches us to wants. Lastly, consciousness is composed of all the "seeds" of our past actions and past actions of our family.
The nutriment that interests me the most is the third nutriment of volition/intention. Volition is the reasoning for all your actions. Our intentions will rule our minds and most of the time we will not realize it, for example while we are sleeping.Everyone has a desire to be happy. The Buddhist teachings on volition and intention is to drop them. Forget what you think makes you happy and appreciate the natural gifts around you, such as children or nature. That will make you happy.
